5 Reasons Adventure Riders Struggle Off Road (And How to Fix It)
Adventure bikes are brilliant on the road and surprisingly capable in the dirt, but the first proper off-road ride can feel like the bike has doubled in weight. The good news is most struggles come down to a handful of habits. At SR75 Suzuki Off-Road Experience we focus on confidence, control and technique in a relaxed, friendly and professional setting, with clear demonstrations, practical drills and supportive coaching.
1) You stay seated when the terrain gets rough
What it feels like: the front end deflects, the rear skips and you feel like a passenger.
Fix: stand up earlier and more often. Keep knees soft, hips loose and weight centred, using your legs as suspension. Practise riding at slow speed while standing, looking ahead and keeping a light grip on the bars.
2) Death-grip on the handlebars
What it feels like: tense arms, arm pump and the bike “wanders” in ruts or stones.
Fix: relax your upper body. Think “heavy feet, light hands”. Let the bike move beneath you while you steer with body position and gentle inputs. On training days we use simple drills that make this click quickly, with feedback tailored to your level.
3) Looking at the problem instead of the exit
What it feels like: you hit the rock, the rut or the puddle you were trying to avoid.
Fix: lift your vision. Pick a line and look to where you want to go, not what you want to miss. Break it down: identify the hazard, choose the exit, commit your eyes to the exit.
4) Poor throttle and brake timing
What it feels like: sudden wheelspin, stalling, or locking a wheel when you panic.
Fix: be smoother, earlier. Set your speed before the obstacle, then use steady throttle through it. Practise progressive braking in a straight line and learn how weight transfer affects grip. Structured sessions with coaching help you build these habits safely and consistently.
5) Tyres, pressure and setup are fighting you
What it feels like: zero traction, vague steering and constant sliding even at gentle speeds.
Fix: match the bike to the day. Tyre choice, pressures and lever setup make a big difference, especially on bigger adventure bikes. If you are unsure, bring your questions along. Our instructors adapt the day to your experience and help you make sensible, confidence-inspiring adjustments.
Build confidence the right way
The fastest progress comes from focused practice with expert eyes on you. SR75 experience days are designed for maximum riding time with small groups (up to six riders) and the option of one-to-one tuition, so you get meaningful feedback without feeling rushed.
