How to Prepare for an Off Road Motorcycle Course

How to Prepare for an Off Road Motorcycle Course

Arrive ready to learn, not just ready to ride

An off-road motorcycle course is all about building confidence, control and technique in a relaxed, friendly and professional environment. At SR75 Off Road, our experience days are structured for maximum riding time with expert coaching in small groups, so you can progress at your pace.

A bit of preparation makes a big difference. You will feel fresher, take in more coaching and enjoy the day more, especially when the terrain gets challenging.

Fitness: focus on endurance and mobility

Off-road riding is physical. You will spend time standing on the pegs, moving your body around the bike and working your balance. You do not need to be an athlete, but a little groundwork helps.

What to do in the week or two beforehand

  • Light cardio (brisk walking, cycling or rowing) to improve stamina.
  • Leg and core work (squats, lunges, planks) to support standing riding.
  • Mobility for hips, ankles, shoulders and wrists to reduce fatigue and improve control.

On the day, eat a proper breakfast, bring water and pace yourself. Fatigue is when technique starts to slip.

Mindset: come to practise, not to prove

The biggest gains usually come from being coachable. Expect structured skills training, demonstrations, practical drills and supportive feedback designed to help you progress safely.

Set simple goals like: smoother throttle control, better body position or calmer braking. If you are completely new to off-road, that is fine. Sessions are adapted to your confidence and experience level.

Gear: bring the right kit and keep it comfortable

You will need suitable riding gear including a helmet, protective clothing and appropriate boots. A comfortable, well-fitting setup helps you relax and concentrate on technique rather than distractions.

Quick kit checklist

  • Helmet and eye protection
  • Gloves with good grip
  • Protective jacket and trousers
  • Sturdy off-road style boots that support the ankle
  • Layers for changeable weather and a spare pair of socks

If you are unsure what is suitable, ask before your day and we can point you in the right direction.

Know what to expect on the day

Your day begins at the welcome centre with introductions and a safety briefing, then you will head out for structured riding sessions. Arrive on time so you can settle in, sort your kit and start the day relaxed.

At SR75 Off Road you will ride specially prepared Suzuki V-Strom 800DE or DR-Z4S motorcycles, chosen for their confidence-inspiring nature on varied terrain. Group sizes are kept small, up to six riders, so you get personal attention and meaningful feedback.

Before you attend, it is worth reading our joining instructions so you know what to bring and how the day runs.

Safety and confidence: be honest and communicate

Safety is the priority throughout the day, so follow instructor guidance and tell us about any relevant medical conditions. If something feels off, speak up early. Good coaching works best when we can tailor the session to you.
